E. M. Alysse Bowd
E. M. Alysse Bowd holds a BFA from the AUArts in Calgary, Alberta and an MFA from NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her creative practice navigates object-making, drawing and live art with a thematic focus on female perfectionism, self-care and motherhood mythologies. Her work finds the beauty and complexity held in the contradictions of being human, and through her work often seeks a balance between wildness and domesticity, playfulness and repose, while glimpsing the absurdity within the everyday.
Flower Bed Carousel
Flower Bed Carousel is a collection of seemingly absurd yet tender examples of romanticizing one's everyday life, a coping mechanism against the constant bombardment of news cycle and social media dread. A sculptural installation of wooden cutout flowers, thorns and brambles placed as a strategic obstacle course, for a birdheaded woman, part swan/part flamingo, who dances a quadrille like the endless dance of a ballerina trapped in a jewelry box. Set to the melancholic yearning of traditional carousel music, the piece resonates on themes of impermanence, girlhood, nostalgic escapism, desire, fear and endurance.
