The Digital & Integrated Practice (DIP) area in the School for the Arts
The Digital & Integrated Practice (DIP) area in the School for the Arts at the University of Saskatchewan includes undergraduate and graduate classes in animation (both traditional and digital), video art, sound art, and integrated media which includes 4D, inter/transdisciplinary, mixed media and other non-traditional art forms (performance art, installation, augmented reality, community-engaged practice, as well as others).
The area chair is Lisa Birke, Associate Professor of Digital and Extended Media and practicing artist working in the collision of video, performance art, and expanded media practice.
Words of Wisdom/Worlds of Visions
"Words of Wisdom/Worlds of Visions" is a selection of videos from the Digital & Integrated Practice classes (USask). Included are works from the Animation & Digital Space class: a so called “Pen”takistoscope (based on a phenakistoscope), hand-drawn and then digitally animated with a contemporary twist; and “Voice of Reason”, where students had to design, rig, and script a wisdom-spouting character in a motion capture animation software in response to a procedural animation that had been made in 3D animation software (seen in the background). The animation projects rely on a complex process of response/reflection in their technical production trajectory and underlying conceptual fabrication, making for a multi-layered experience.
The Video Art & Sound classes are also represented by two projects: “Video ______ the Radio Star”, that had students stage a call and response between both recorded and creative commons found visuals and audio inspired by music videos and karaoke; and “BIGtiny”, where a small-scale maquette was recorded via unconventional “tiny” camera rigs. BIGtiny focuses on the mise-en-scene and how material, construction, and editing communicate not only through narrative structures but also via emotional evocation, affect, and sense-based tactility.
Hence, the screening reel represents the coalescence of wisdom and vision.
